Welcome to Alaska. The ~not last~ frontier.
We’re looking at you, Mars.
Some readers may have an image of True Detective: Night Country in their mind. Do not fear, we’ll keep this newsletter lighter, include a little sunlight, and avoid a Scooby Doo-Ass Finale.
We’ve included a variety of recommendations because Alaska has earned it; she’s roughly 2.5X the size of Texas.

Activity Recs
Enterprise rent-a-car - You won’t get far in Alaska without a set of wheels. Do yourself a favor and go big with this rental, including 4X4 abilities. Be prepared to watch for moose and black ice as you speed around town and up mountain passes.
Matanuska Glacier - Make this one of your first stops. While it may be considered touristy, you’ll receive the necessary gear and guidance to safely explore an active glacier. Enjoy winding through crevices and learning about the powerful grip these ice sheets once had over much of the earth.
Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel - The longest highway tunnel in North America at nearly 2.5 miles in length. It shares the space with a railroad line constructed during WWII and used for soldier transportation. Immerse in darkness on your way to hike and explore Whittier, Alaska.
Whittier Alaska - This town was involved in WWII, the Cold War, and now has an economy based on commercial fishing, the railroad, and tourism with only 220 residents. Almost all residents live in one Condo. While it’s a quirky place, there’s ample opportunity to explore hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and watch salmon run up the river to lay their eggs.
Portage Pass Trail - Located near Whittier, Alaska. This is a relatively strenuous hike through greenery to a glacial lake with a view of Portage glacier. It’s amazing to work your way towards one of nature’s landmarks that has stood for many thousands of years and carved the ground we are now able to walk on.
Seward Highway - An epic drive awaits down this coastal highway south of Anchorage. It boasts mountain and ocean views featuring lookout points and various opportunities to view wildlife (including whales, moose, seals, and more).
Mount Baldy Loop - A hop, skip, and a jaunt from Anchorage. Mount Baldy is a solid day hike in both the summer and the winter. Keep your eye on the trail markers as I found myself lost more than once scaling snowfields and sliding down the mountain. It’s safe enough if you’re up for that Tomfoolery too.
Independence Mine State Historical Park - Located near Hatcher Pass. This park is booming with life in the spring/summer and a winter whiteout during the fall/winter. Think epic winter storms you remember as a kid if you were about that northern life. If you weren’t, see the next image. It’s a gorgeous drive and a wonderful place to park the car and enjoy a hike, walk, ski, sled, or snow angel.
Food Recs
49th State Brewing ($$) - Alaska’s cold. Strong, microbrewery beer is needed to keep warm. Stop by this local watering hole and grab a pint and some classic fish and chips.
Whittier Oceanfront Cafe ($) - A wonderful cafe located on the harbor. The best (and only) spot in town to grab a coffee and bite to eat. Kickstart your day in the colony with an espresso or light roast.
Crow’s Nest ($$$) - “Crow’s Nest Chef de Cuisine, Cameron Richardson, endeavors to infuse his love for cooking and Alaska into every bite. Following a professional soccer career in New Zealand, Chef Cameron returned to the United States to pursue his culinary passions.” (Crow’s Nest @the hotel Captain Cook)
Dissuasions
Winter Solstice - While an Anchorage, Alaskan summer boasts a solstice with sunlight for over 19 hours, days near the winter solstice can have less than 6 hours of sun. Plan to visit accordingly, and if you choose to go in winter, make sure you’re viewing the northern lights.
Underestimating the elements - It’s called the last frontier for a reason. Educate yourself before embarking on adventures in this terrain. Don’t let your last nickname be Bear Snack.

Can’t Beat My Ol’ Beater - The Doohickeys
Credit to Sirius XM radio for this one. A country tune with a catchy baseline. Check out The Doohickeys and crack open an NA cold one.

Lost - This show has me in a chokehold as we begin 2025. I’m always skeptical about starting shows with multiple long seasons. I’d rather not spend every night visiting a make-believe world for 45 minutes. But, who am I kidding? It’s 2025. We’re not even sure what’s real or not anyway.
Reading Rec:
The Whole Story - John Mackey
The story of Whole Foods Market is told by founder, John Mackey. An entertaining and educational read. I found the storytelling in this book compelling along with a glimpse into a still growing market of natural foods. From hippies to millionaires, grab a kindle or paperback and begin the year with an inspiring story.
Quote to consider:
“Life ain't like books. Books got somebody writin' 'em and tryin' to entertain ya. Life is more like a set of Legos. Unless you take care of 'em, you lose a few pieces and you end up steppin' on 'em with bare feet. You gotta take care of your life.” - Laura Moncur
