Oahu, HI

Aloha. We are stoked to share our Oahu recommendations from our visit in 2024.

Activity Recs

Outdoor Bathrooms - Is there a better way to enjoy a morning constitutional? I think not. Immersing yourself in the outdoors while you shower brings us back to previous generations. Almost cavemen? Yes. An outdoor bathroom has officially entered the 10 year plan. Mahalo.

Banzai Pipeline - Welcome to the best waves in the US and host of the Lexus Pipe Pro - a World Surf League event. While I imagine none of us can surf these waves, you can spend hours watching athletes harness nature’s beauty. You may even spot humpback whales breaching in the distance.

Hale'iwa & Waimea Bay - Hale'iwa is a small town on the Northwest side of the island. Visit local shops, food trucks, and Waimea Bay on your way there. Waimea offers cliff jumping, sea turtle sightings, snorkeling, and Waimea river running through the canyon to the beach.

Kahuku Food Trucks - Going to eat in the north shore area is best done at this epicenter. Tourism feeds these businesses, and damn it they’re great. Check out Ry’s Poke Shack($), Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck($), and grab dessert at The Beach Bus ($)(fried cheesecake all day and night).

Waikiki - Head to Moku Hawaii to rent yourself a surfboard and book a lesson. The beachfront and waves in this area are ideal for beginners. You’ll exit the comfort zone, but not fear shark attacks. Check out Steak Shack($) for dinner located on the beachfront. Long lines. Worth the wait. Enjoy your protein and carbs sitting on the beach at sunset. Also, visit Paia Fish Market($$) and order the seafood pasta immediately.

p.s. jonesing for a workout? Visit Crossfit Oahu and bring a buddy.

Dissuasions

Waikiki - I know. I’m contradicting myself. Most tourists spend the majority of their time here and miss out on the rest of the island. While it has bright spots, we recommend spending 1-2 days here and the rest of your time exploring the greater island.

Eat your fruits, vegetables, and fish - Many local dishes we tried were delicious, but heavy on oils. Start adding fruits and vegetables to your pallet early on. You’ll thank yourself on day 4.

Song Rec:

I’m the One - Finn - s/o to the homeless for sharing this vibe in Waikiki.

Book Rec:

Wide Wide Sea - Hampton Sides

I’m currently enjoying this read. It places you onboard the ship with Captain Cook during his third voyage. A tough one to put down.

Quote to consider:

“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops, That's where you'll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.” - IZ
